Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meatballs

  1. In a large bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients except for the olive oil. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Form into 1 ¼–1 ½-inch meatballs and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 2: Cook the Meatballs

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry the meatballs in batches, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

Step 3: Make the Gravy

  1. Reduce heat to medium. Add butter to the skillet and let it melt.
  2. Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring no lumps remain. Add Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce, stirring well.

Step 4: Simmer and Finish

  1. Return the meatballs to the skillet. Simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are cooked through and the gravy thickens.
  2. Turn off the heat and stir in sour cream. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve warm over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.

Notes

  • Flavor Boost: Add a pinch of ground white pepper for authentic Swedish flavor.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare meatballs in advance and freeze for a quick meal later.
  • Smooth Sauce: Strain the gravy if you prefer a velvety texture.
