Enjoy the comforting taste of these Soft and Chewy Brown Sugar Amish Cookies. Flavored with cinnamon and topped with an optional maple glaze, they’re the perfect homemade treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Glaze (Optional):

  • 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/21 tablespoon milk (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2: Cream Butter and Sugars

  • In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream butter, brown sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).

Step 3: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  • Gradually mix in the dry ingredients just until a soft dough forms.
  • For best results, chill the dough for 30–40 minutes to make it easier to handle and to create thicker cookies.

Step 4: Bake the Cookies

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll chilled dough into 1-inch balls and place on the baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 10–11 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned.
  • Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 5: Prepare the Glaze (Optional)

  • In a small bowl, whisk powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and maple syrup.
  • Adjust consistency by adding milk a few drops at a time, if necessary.
  • Drizzle glaze over cooled cookies and allow it to set before serving.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough helps prevent the cookies from spreading too much during baking.
  • Use high-quality cinnamon for the best flavor.
  • These cookies are delicious with or without the glaze. If glazing, let the cookies cool completely first.
