Ingredients

Units Scale
  • Cake Layers:
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Buttercream Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk or cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: food coloring (pastel yellow, light blue, or white)
  • Decorations:
  • 1 large mama duck topper (fondant or modeling chocolate)
  • 35 smaller ducklings (fondant or modeling chocolate)
  • Edible flowers or sugar daisies
  • Piped grass, water ripple effect, or shredded coconut (tinted green or blue)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare two 8 or 9-inch round cake pans with grease and flour.
  • In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well. Stir in vanilla.
  • Gradually mix in flour mixture and milk until just combined.
  • Pour batter into pans and bake for 25–30 minutes. Cool completely.
  • For buttercream, beat butter, then add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Tint as desired.
  • Frost cake layers and decorate top and sides with a smooth or wavy finish.
  • Position mama duck and baby duck toppers on top. Add flowers and details to create a peaceful duck family scene.

Notes

  • Fondant duck toppers can be made 1–2 days ahead and stored at room temperature.
  • Use light blue and green frosting for a pond-and-grass look.
  • This design works beautifully on single- or double-tiered cakes.
