Ingredients

Units Scale

Special Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tbsp rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
  • 2 tbsp sweet relish
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp chili flakes (optional)

Fries & Toppings:

  • 1/2 bag frozen fries
  • 4 slices American cheese (or shredded cheddar)
  • 2 onions, diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions:

    • Heat butter and oil in a pan over medium-low heat.
    • Add diced onions and salt, stirring occasionally. Cook for 30+ minutes until golden and caramelized. Reduce heat if they brown too fast.
  • Prepare the Special Sauce:

    • In a bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, relish, sugar, and chili flakes (if using). Set aside.
  • Cook the Fries:

    • Follow the package instructions for baking, frying, or air-frying the frozen fries until golden and crispy.
  • Melt the Cheese:

    • Place cooked fries on a baking sheet, top with cheese slices or shredded cheddar.
    • Broil for 3-5 minutes until the cheese melts.
  • Assemble the Fries:

    • Top the cheesy fries with caramelized onions.
    • Drizzle the special sauce over the top.
  • Serve & Enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra crispy fries: Double fry them or bake them longer than recommended.
  • Customize the cheese: Try Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, or a cheese blend.
  • Make it spicy: Add hot sauce to the special sauce or sprinkle sliced jalapeños on top.
  • Want to make homemade fries? Slice russet potatoes, soak in cold water, then fry or bake until crisp.
