Description

These Homemade Soft Pretzel Bites are chewy, golden, and perfectly salty—just like you’d get at a fair or mall. Easy to make at home with a simple dough and baking soda bath, they’re the ultimate crowd-pleasing snack served warm with mustard, cheese sauce, or sweet dips.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • :
  • For the pretzel dough:
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • For boiling:
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 9 cups water
  • For topping:
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt or pretzel salt
  • Optional: melted butter for brushing after baking

Instructions

  • :
  • Activate yeast: In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Make the dough: Add melted butter, flour, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms, then knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
  • Let rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
  • Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Shape bites: Punch down dough and divide into 6 pieces. Roll each into a 20-inch rope, then cut into 1-inch pieces.
  • Boil in baking soda water: Bring 9 cups water and baking soda to a boil. Drop dough pieces in for 20–30 seconds, then transfer to the baking sheet.
  • Bake: Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with salt, and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
  • Optional: Brush with melted butter right out of the oven for extra flavor.

Notes

  • :
  • For a sweet version, skip the salt and toss warm bites in cinnamon sugar.
  • Serve with cheese dip, mustard, or chocolate sauce.
  • Make ahead by freezing unbaked bites and boiling + baking fresh.
