Description

Homemade Black Sesame Pop Tarts are a unique twist on the classic toaster pastry, featuring a nutty black sesame filling wrapped in flaky pastry and topped with a sweet glaze.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
  • 1/2 cup black sesame seeds, toasted
  • 1/4 cup sugar (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons water (as needed for filling consistency)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water until dough comes together. Form into two disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  4. Toast black sesame seeds and grind into a coarse powder. Mix with sugar, honey, and a bit of water until a spreadable paste forms.
  5. Roll out the chilled dough and cut into equal-sized rectangles.
  6. Place a spoonful of sesame filling in the center of half the rectangles, leaving a border.
  7. Brush edges with beaten egg, place another dough rectangle on top, and press to seal. Use a fork to crimp edges.
  8. Place on a baking sheet and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Brush tops with egg wash and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool, then mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract for glaze. Drizzle over cooled tarts.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought pie dough to save time.
  • Ensure sesame seeds are well-ground for a smooth filling.
  • Adjust filling sweetness to taste.
