Homemade Black Sesame Pop Tarts are a unique twist on the classic toaster pastry, featuring a nutty black sesame filling wrapped in flaky pastry and topped with a sweet glaze.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
- 1/2 cup black sesame seeds, toasted
- 1/4 cup sugar (for filling)
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 to 2 tablespoons water (as needed for filling consistency)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional for glaze)
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
- Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water until dough comes together. Form into two disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Toast black sesame seeds and grind into a coarse powder. Mix with sugar, honey, and a bit of water until a spreadable paste forms.
- Roll out the chilled dough and cut into equal-sized rectangles.
- Place a spoonful of sesame filling in the center of half the rectangles, leaving a border.
- Brush edges with beaten egg, place another dough rectangle on top, and press to seal. Use a fork to crimp edges.
- Place on a baking sheet and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush tops with egg wash and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool, then mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract for glaze. Drizzle over cooled tarts.
Notes
- You can use store-bought pie dough to save time.
- Ensure sesame seeds are well-ground for a smooth filling.
- Adjust filling sweetness to taste.
