Description

This hamburger and potato casserole is a hearty, old-fashioned favorite that’s layered with seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, creamy sauce, and melty cheese. It’s an easy, budget-friendly dinner that’s perfect for cozy nights and feeding hungry families.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cups thinly sliced potatoes (Yukon gold or russet)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Optional: chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until browned. Drain excess fat. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup, milk, and paprika until smooth.
  • In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the beef mixture, and half of the soup mixture. Repeat layers.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  • Remove foil, sprinkle with cheddar cheese, and bake uncovered for 15–20 more minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender and cheese is bubbly.
  • Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For added texture, top with crushed Ritz crackers or fried onions before baking the cheese layer.
  • Can substitute cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or homemade white sauce.
