Ingredients

Units Scale
  • For the Cake Pops
  • 1 box vanilla or chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • For Coating and Decoration
  • 16 oz candy melts or chocolate coating (white, dark, or colored)
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Sprinkles, edible glitter, or sanding sugar (optional)
  • Mini peanut butter cups or chocolate squares (for graduation caps)
  • Licorice strings or fondant (for tassels)
  • Edible markers or piping gel (for writing)

Instructions

  • Prepare the cake according to package instructions. Let it cool completely.
  • In a bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Beat until fluffy.
  • Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl. Add the frosting and mix until the dough can be shaped.
  • Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Chill for 2 hours or freeze for 1 hour.
  • Melt a small amount of candy melts. Dip the tip of each lollipop stick into it, then insert into a cake ball.
  • Melt remaining candy melts. Dip each cake pop to coat fully. Tap off excess and let set upright in a stand.
  • Once set, attach mini peanut butter cups or chocolate squares as caps using melted chocolate.
  • Add tassels using licorice or fondant. Write messages or the year with edible markers or piping gel.

Notes

  • Chill the cake balls thoroughly before coating to prevent crumbling.
  • Add a small amount of vegetable oil to thin thick candy coating.
  • Customize colors to match your graduate’s school theme.
