Description

Fried Scallion Buns are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and packed with savory scallions. These delightful buns are a popular Chinese street snack, easy to make at home, and perfect as a side dish or appetizer.


Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped scallions
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (plus more for frying)
  • Optional: sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit until foamy (about 5 minutes).
  • Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead into a smooth dough.
  • Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and roll it into a rectangle.
  • Brush with vegetable oil and sprinkle evenly with chopped scallions.
  • Roll the dough into a log and cut into equal pieces.
  • Flatten each piece slightly into a bun shape.
  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat and fry buns until golden and crispy on both sides.
  • Optionally sprinkle with sesame seeds while still hot. Serve warm.
