Ingredients

Units Scale
  • Cake:
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Blue Buttercream Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk or heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Blue gel food coloring
  • Decorations:
  • 23 floating duck toppers (fondant, plastic, or piped frosting)
  • Clear gelatin bubbles or isomalt bubbles
  • White chocolate pearls or round sprinkles (for mini bubbles)
  • Edible glitter or shimmer dust (optional for water sparkle)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
  • Alternate adding flour mixture and milk, mixing just until combined.
  • Divide batter evenly into pans. Bake 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  • Make buttercream by beating butter until creamy. Slowly mix in powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Add blue gel coloring for a water effect.
  • Frost and stack cake layers, creating soft waves with the blue frosting to mimic water.
  • Add floating duck toppers to the surface.
  • Create edible bubbles using clear gelatin or isomalt and arrange on and around the cake. Finish with chocolate pearls and edible shimmer.

Notes

  • Gelatin bubbles can be made in advance using balloons and dried overnight.
  • For a glossy water effect, mix piping gel with a drop of blue coloring and apply on top.
  • Ensure duck toppers are food-safe and clean if not edible.
