Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Casserole:

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

1️⃣ Prep the Baking Dish:

  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the dish.

2️⃣ Make the Custard:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  2. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked.

3️⃣ Chill:

  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it sit for at least 1 hour or overnight in the refrigerator.

4️⃣ Prepare the Topping:

  1. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon until crumbly.
  2. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the casserole.

5️⃣ Bake:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole uncovered for 45–50 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.

6️⃣ Serve:

  • Serve warm with optional maple syrup, fresh berries, or powdered sugar for added sweetness.

Notes

  • Bread Options: Substitute with brioche, challah, or any sturdy bread.
  • Add-Ins: Try mixing in raisins, nuts, or chocolate chips for added flavor.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare the casserole the night before and bake fresh in the morning.
