- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp instant yeast
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (optional for filling)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, sugar, yeast, baking powder, and salt.
- Add warm milk and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions.
- Flatten each piece, add chocolate chips in the center (if using), and shape into a bun.
- Place the buns on parchment paper squares and let them rest for 15–20 minutes.
- Steam the buns over boiling water for 12–15 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and let them sit covered for 5 minutes before removing the lid to prevent shrinking.
Notes
- Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast without killing it.
- You can skip the filling for plain chocolate buns.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat by steaming.
