Instructions
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 1.5-quart casserole dish or an 8×8-inch square baking pan.
- Prepare the Batter:
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cocoa powder.
- Add melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
- If using walnuts, fold them in.
- Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
- Make the Topping:
- In a separate bowl, combine sugar, brown sugar, salt, and cocoa powder.
- Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter—do not stir.
- Add the Water:
- Carefully pour the boiling water over the sugar mixture.
- Do not stir; leave it as is.
- Bake:
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until the top is mostly set.
- The cake will rise to the top, while the pudding layer forms underneath.
