Description
This chicken fried steak is a Southern classic featuring tender cube steak that’s breaded, pan-fried to golden perfection, and smothered in creamy country gravy. It’s crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfect served with mashed potatoes and green beans for a true comfort food feast.

- 4 cube steaks (about 1/2 inch thick)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- For the Gravy:
- 1/4 cup flour (from the leftover dredge)
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- In another bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk.
- Dredge each cube steak in flour, then dip into the egg mixture, then back in the flour. Press to coat well.
- Heat 1/2 inch oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry steaks 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- For gravy: Remove all but 1/4 cup of oil from the skillet. Whisk in 1/4 cup of the seasoned flour and cook 1–2 minutes. Slowly whisk in milk, stirring constantly, until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Serve steaks hot with the gravy poured over top.
Notes
- Cube steak is traditional, but you can also use pounded sirloin or round steak.
- Make sure oil is hot enough before frying to ensure a crispy crust.
- Pair with mashed potatoes and green beans for the full Southern experience.
