Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Chicken

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Marinade

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

For Garnish

  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • Toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Marinade

  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry), five-spice powder, ground ginger, and minced garlic. Mix until smooth.

Step 2: Marinate the Chicken

  1. Pat the chicken breasts or thighs dry and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Place the chicken in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over it.
  3. Ensure the chicken is fully coated, then cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 24 hours for more flavor).

Step 3: Cook the Chicken

Option 1: Grill

  1. Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  2. Remove the chicken from the marinade and grill for 6–7 minutes per side, basting occasionally with the marinade, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

Option 2: Bake

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Place the chicken on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20–25 minutes, basting halfway through, until fully cooked.

Option 3: Pan-Sear

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of oil.
  2. Sear the chicken for 5–6 minutes per side, then reduce heat to medium and cook until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

  1. Garnish the cooked chicken with chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds.
  2. Serve with steamed rice, noodles, or stir-fried vegetables.

Notes

  • For an authentic flavor, substitute regular soy sauce with dark soy sauce for richer color and taste.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • For extra caramelization, broil the chicken for 2–3 minutes after baking or grilling.
