Description
This Caramelized Onion and Cheese Tart is a savory, melt-in-your-mouth treat with a flaky puff pastry crust, sweet golden onions, and a cheesy, herby finish. Perfect for brunch, appetizers, or an elegant light dinner, it’s as easy as it is impressive.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried)
- 1 cup shredded cheese (Gruyère, Swiss, or cheddar)
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add onions, salt, and pepper.
- Cook slowly, stirring often, for 25–30 minutes until golden and caramelized. Stir in thyme.
- Unfold the puff pastry on the baking sheet. Score a 1-inch border around the edges.
- Spread the caramelized onions within the border, then sprinkle evenly with cheese.
- Brush the edges with beaten egg if using.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the pastry is golden and puffed.
- Cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use a mix of cheeses for added depth—Gruyère and cheddar are a great combo.
- Make the caramelized onions ahead for quicker prep.
- Serve warm or at room temperature. Pairs well with a fresh salad.
- Optional: add a spoonful of Dijon mustard under the onions for extra tang.
