- For the Chocolate Cake Base
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (German chocolate or chocolate fudge)
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/3 cup evaporated milk
- For the Caramel Filling
- 50 soft caramels, unwrapped
- 1/3 cup evaporated milk
- For the Topping
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Sea salt flakes (optional)
- Edible gold leaf or graduation-themed decorations (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a bowl, mix cake mix, melted butter, and evaporated milk to form a dough.
- Press half the dough into the pan and bake for 8–10 minutes.
- While baking, melt caramels with evaporated milk in a saucepan until smooth.
- Remove pan from oven, sprinkle chocolate chips over the base.
- Pour caramel mixture over the chocolate layer and spread evenly.
- Drop spoonfuls of remaining dough over the caramel and lightly spread.
- Bake for an additional 18–20 minutes, or until the top is set.
- Cool completely, then sprinkle with sea salt and decorate as desired.
- Cut into squares and serve.
Notes
- Add ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts for extra texture.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
