Scale
- 6 small to medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
- 6 wooden sticks or skewers
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional toppings: chopped nuts, crushed cookies, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles
Instructions
- Wash apples thoroughly and dry completely. Insert sticks into the tops of each apple. Line a baking sheet with parchment and lightly grease it.
- In a heavy saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches 245°F (firm-ball stage) on a candy thermometer.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let the caramel cool slightly to thicken, about 5 minutes.
- Dip each apple into the caramel, swirling to coat evenly. Let excess drip off and roll in toppings if desired.
- Place on prepared baking sheet and let set at room temperature or refrigerate for faster firming.
Notes
- Make sure apples are dry so the caramel sticks well.
- You can use store-bought caramel for an even quicker version—just melt and dip!
- Wrapped in wax paper, these make great gifts.
