A classic and versatile Italian tomato sauce made with simple ingredients, perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a base for other dishes.

- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2–3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) whole peeled tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Fresh basil leaves (optional)
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour in the canned tomatoes with their juice. Crush the tomatoes using a spoon or potato masher.
- Stir in salt, sugar (if using), oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Simmer uncovered for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
- Add fresh basil leaves if desired and season with black pepper to taste.
- Use immediately or let cool and store for later use.
Notes
- You can blend the sauce for a smoother texture.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Add a splash of red wine for deeper flavor.
