Description

A classic and versatile Italian tomato sauce made with simple ingredients, perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a base for other dishes.


Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 23 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the canned tomatoes with their juice. Crush the tomatoes using a spoon or potato masher.
  5. Stir in salt, sugar (if using), oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  6. Simmer uncovered for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
  7. Add fresh basil leaves if desired and season with black pepper to taste.
  8. Use immediately or let cool and store for later use.

Notes

  • You can blend the sauce for a smoother texture.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Add a splash of red wine for deeper flavor.
