Description

Amish Sloppy Joes are a timeless comfort food classic! Ground beef, onions, and bell peppers are simmered in a sweet and tangy sauce, then served on toasted buns for an easy, delicious meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Sloppy Joes:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Serving:

  • 6 hamburger buns (toasted, optional)

Instructions

. Cook the Ground Beef

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.

2. Sauté the Vegetables

  • Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.

3. Prepare the Sauce

  • Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well to coat the beef and vegetables evenly in the sauce.

4. Simmer

  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

5. Assemble and Serve

  • Toast the hamburger buns (optional) and spoon a generous portion of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Place the top bun on and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Variations: Add a pinch of chili powder or smoked paprika for extra depth of flavor.
  • Make-Ahead Tip: The filling can be made ahead of time and reheated when ready to serve. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair with coleslaw, pickles, or potato chips for a classic diner-style meal.
